Most of you probably know that my dad is a minister and therefore has been my minister my whole life. Now, I know you're thinking but you haven't gone to his church in a long time! But... here's the thing: I never joined any other church either. I am, as of this moment, still a member of Parkway Christian Church in Springfield, IL. which is slightly ironic considering I only lived there for four years and have now been away twice that long. However, they are home. What I've realized is part of growing up though is making new homes... I chose D.C. for school, for opportunity... and now I'm choosing to make it my home as well. Later this morning I will be joining Wesley United Methodist Church three blocks from my house. It is the first time I've ever made the decision to join a church... and what's more I'm leaving the denomination that has given me so much. In some ways it doesn't mean much - the theology is practically the same, we have an open table (with homemade bread!) every Sunday, and it's a very liberal, friendly, diverse congregation. In other ways it seems like a big step... Disciples of Christ (my dad's denomination) has been a big part of my identity over the years. From church camp to Regional Youth Council, to the General Board, to mission work in India... even as far as my undergrad university (Go TCU Horned Frogs!) and Phillips Legacy Scholarship... it's all been connected to DOC!
So, though it's going to be slightly different, I'm super excited to feel ready to take this next step here in D.C. and in life... after all, what is growing up if it isn't making the tough choices toward change. Change is hard, but change is good.
Parkway will still be my family... Wesley will now be my church home.
Peace and Blessings to you all!
KK
Kate, Yes Parkway will always be your family, but so happy you have found a church home where you are living. What a blessing.
ReplyDeleteAnother blessing was your father's sermon this morning. Ask him for a copy.

Awww, thanks! Ok, I did... we'll see if he sends it! :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you're feeling better Audrey! Mom said you've been really sick!
