I arrived in Hanoi after about 21 hrs of travel, shared a taxi with a Brit, and went to bed almost immediately upon arrival at my hostel around midnight local time. Thanks to jet lag I was wide awake by 6am...so, I got up and decided to start exploring, mostly the old quarter, on foot. It was a fantastically long, packed, loud, colorful day of wandering! The motorbikes, honking, smells, tripping on the road/sewer/sidewalk were at times overwhelming and at times exciting. I got very lost twice, but was able to successfully complete lonely planet's walking tour! I also got to try my first real Vietnamese coffee, a mystery fruit, and local beer. And before the day was over, I was able to watch the famous water puppet show. All in all I took a bicycle taxi to a restaurant that no longer exists in that location, walked for about 9 hrs, and feel like I started to learn how to cross the street. Some pics from the day follow!
