Michael Jackson, A New York City Dress Designer, Nuns Buying Beer and Fried Ants

What can I say, this has been quite a week! hahaha :)
Yes, even though Michael is mostly unknown in these parts, he is just now making his King of Pop appearance in the Jungle. Last night after dinner someone who just came in from vacation brought a disc of about 50 music videos all from Michael Jackson. My oh my, you should have seen some of the reactions... everything from confusion, to hysterical laughter, to frightened yelps (like when he turns from a black panther into himself in one of the videos), to utter shock! You knew they didn't understand what in the world was going on, who this guy was that looked "blacker" in some videos than others, and left with MANY more questions than they came with... Can you just imagine! :) And, led to quick a lesson and discussion about race relations in the USA and the N word in my evening classes... Yikes!
Yes, I met a famous dress designer and didn't even know it! That was after meeting two stars of the TV show, JAG, a couple of weeks ago. But, this dress designer started and owns the company Jump Apparel and he and his family invited me to stay at their house on the upper east side of Manhattan next time I'm in New York... are you kidding me?! Some crazy connections at this place in the middle of the stinkin jungle!
Yes, you read correctly... the Nuns in the community... the goody two shoes, white dress wearing, air of being better than any and everyone in the community, teachers at the school... came to the volunteers' room asking to purchase beer (that one of the volunteers had come to buy from a floating Peruvian market or canoe store if you will). I couldn't believe my ears! Mary, this belongs on your "Nuns have more fun" calendar for SURE! :) Good times in the jungle!
Yes, I ate burned/fried giant flying ants this morning for breakfast! Hahaha! Not kidding, they found a colony, burned them out, collected them with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm, took them to the kitchen, fried them up and finished killing them, and then we picked off the wings and legs... opened up and popped em in! A little crunchy, a strange flavor, but none the less not so bad... and probably could have been a little be better with a little salt. Let's just say all the guys were much more excited about their little addition to breakfast, than this foreigner to jungle delicacies! :)
Ok, gotta run to go give tests in my classes, but hope everyone is doing well on that side!
Love ya,
Kate

P.S. A HUGE congratulations to my friend, Kristi... she and her husband David just had a beautiful baby boy. Thanks be to God that Gideon made into this world healthy and happy! Congratulations you two! :)

  3. Giant burned/fried flying ants sounds scumptious! I guess I would have preferred them with salt too, or hot sauce may have been a good alternative. Picking off legs and wings sounds exciting, I know you liked that Kate! A world of adventure I do envy though.....

  7. Well, you have had an interesting expeience between Michael Jackson videos, dress designers, movie stars, beer drinking nuns, and a most unique source of protein for breakfast. Sounds like fun to me. Your grandma is doing well and your Dad is trying to "fatten" her up cooking for her. It is Holy Week and busy, but so meaningful. Miss you and pray for you daily. Audrey
