IN THE WORLD WE LIVE IN...

As you look into the lagoon,
or into the Southern night sky,
you realize...

everything is perspective.

Whether you're searching the waters
to find just the right fish
on which to hedge your bets,
or combing the constellations
for just the right star
on which to place your wishes.

You realize...

For every business meeting,
there is a tribal gathering.

For every potato,
there is yucca.

For every pop song on the charts,
there is an age old planting chant.

For every hat,
there is a tuasam.

For every made-up woman,
there is a face-painted hunter.

For every can of beer,
there is pinink of chicha.

For every medicine or pill,
there is a natural remedy.

For every pet dog or cat,
there is a pet monkey, turtle, or parrot.

For every toilet,
there is a clearing in the forest.

For every pair of suit pants,
there is a itip.

For every car horn or blasting stereo,
there is chorus of birds, frogs, monkeys, and insects.

For every washing machine,
there is a clay wash basin filled with rain water.

For every stroller,
there is a native wrap.

For every doctor,
there is a shaman.

For every life plan,
there are dreams.

And as you continue to gaze into the great depths of the water
or the amazing vastness of the sky,
you find yourself in the middle of a whole new realization.

It's not that everything is perspective after all...
it's simply that perspective is EVERYTHING.

  1. I read your poem to Grand,ma on "In The World we Live," and it really is a matter of everything is perspectives. Grand'ma said she liked all the comparisons, we send you a big hug and kiss from our end of the world. Love the picture!

  3. You have become quite a philospher on this trip.
There are many layers to your poem and much to learn from it.

  4. Does the painting on your faces have a special meaning? I love the poem...thought provoking. We all too often take for granted what we have and who is to say simpler isn't better. What an experience. I can only imagine that vast sky. How glorious! Thank you God, for the beauty and bounty which you've given us. So glad you are experiencing this Kate.

  5. Simpler? Sometimes. Different? For sure. Better? Who's to say.
Thanks for reading and commenting. I do feel blessed... everyday!
As for the painting on my face, basically on each cheek is a representation of a pinink, or the clay bowls the women make. He told me he did this design because the bowls are delicate and beautiful like me, and so that I would have the strength and character of the Achuar women who make them. Wow... wonder if it worked?
But there's one thing for sure... they BELIEVE in their ways of life and living. Dreams are life altering here, myths ARE history, and vibes can form your relationship with someone in an instant. It's truly a completely other realm in that sense.
All of that to say, Yaur got a feeling of what he should paint for me, what I needed protection or encouragement in, and that's what he painted... simple as that (for them).
