So... I'm really starting to think that these early civilizations were onto something. There's reason they used little or no clothing! It's just plain impractical in the garden of Eden or in the Amazon Rainforest. Between washing by hand with either rain water or river water... the fact that nothing ever drys... and as I learned today mold spores form super eaily and don't come out of material! Did I mention it rains 280 days of the year, or something crazy like that, here?!
So probably the most frustrating and annoying part of everything for me is just that... CLOTHES! It's to the point where everything I put on smells... if not from being used already and always sweating, then simply from being in my hut where moisture just collects and everything is always damp and stinky! ARG! Then there's the fact that I spent 2.5 hours scrubbing my clothes by hand this afternoon only for it to start raining when I was about halfway finished.... grrrrrrrr! I decided to just stick with it and wash in the rain, why not?! Much to the amusement of my compadres.... they thought it was hilarious that the foreign girl was still out washing her clothes after hours and in the rain.... looking, I'm sure, somewhat like a drown rat! :)
I have tried to just accept that I will always stink, but it's ok cause everyone else does too. I have tried to accept that some of my clothing will not make it out of the jungle intact or usable. I have also tried to accept that at least there is laundry soap and a scrub brush... and I'm not beating my clothes against a rock in the river like many of locals. TRIED is the key word here.... cause all that "accepting" being said, I cannot wait to dump ALL of these clothes into a washing machine AND dryer! :)... hmmm, that dryer part hasn't happened in all of my time in South America actually!
Anyway, I know it sounds like complaining, but really it's just simply pointing out the intelligence of our ancestors and their loin cloths! :)

Kate: Sometimes complaining is okay :) I love you!
ReplyDeleteeek, i would get so sick of all that rain. remember how hard it was to enjoy machu picchu because of the rain and clouds? LAME. i'll watch the videos one more time and laugh for the both of us!
ReplyDeleteKate, alot of learning happens in the rain and storms of life! This is all temporary, try to concentrate on the positive in all your circumstances; remember contentment is not getting what we want, but being satisfied with what we have and whatever circumstances we're in! Does it sound familiar?
