There was a birthday party in one of the villages last night.... So there was a last minute trip arranged to go... and a bunch of us young employees jumped on the chance for a party. Little did I know it would be for an 11 year old girl, who is the cousin of one of my students... cause the party was just as much for adults as it was for kids. We arrived at about 10 after all the day's activities by canoe... lots of muddy walking, wooden stairs and tree trunk bridges! Most people there were already a little worse for the ware after all the chicha drinking, but we were there and ready to liven up the party! The chef even brought a cake for the birthday girl (a even got a tiny slice... BOY what a treat that was)! It was great fun getting to play with all the kids a game of keep-the-balloon-off-the-ground... oh and the more foolish you can make the foreigner look the better! :) They had me diving, kicking, lunging, and most of all laughing! It was great fun and then I got out the camera... watch out! I had to pretend that the battery was dead to get out of the mob of kids shouting "just one more... the last one we promise!" hahaha! Oh, and they had the biggest "pinink" or handmade clay chicha drinking bowl I've EVER seen and of course somehow it ended up I was supposed to drink all of it! Yikes! This is a pic of my roomate trying to help me in tipping the giant bowl.
It was a great time, dancing, drinking chicha (local fermented yucca drink) and just plain enjoying all my new friends and their culture!
Thanks birthday girl... who I still don't even know your name! :)

*By the way, I didn't feel that bad crashing because I had made the birthday invitations at my student's request last week! Because among other things I have become somewhat of a technical genius or something here... all because I fixed the printer and helped someone with their computer problem! So of course, he would come to me to make a fold-able birthday invitation by computer! :)

Great pictures of the kids! Do they sing a song to the birthday girl?
ReplyDeleteGrand'ma said, "I think it's neat you made a basket on your own, I really enjoyed your telephone call. Becky's computer is still down, so tech genius Ed will have to look @ it this weekend.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the party food was more enjoyable than the grumbs, but probably not as healthy. :)

hahaha, thanks Audrey! Yeah, mom, they sing feliz cumpleanos or happy birthday in spanish. before the missionaries came they didn't celebrate birthdays... in fact, like my students from Africa at INA, many of the older folks don't have any idea of their actual age. And man, Becky, sorry your computer is acting up, that's big bummer! Love ya Grams and Lynn! Thanks for continuing to read everybody!
