It's the little things...

So my friend Pedro has a huge family. He has eight sisters, who are all younger (except one) and all married with little children, and one little half brother... Not to mention all the aunts and uncles and cousins, etc. All of that to say that his godson and little half brother is only 8 years old and very cute! He asked me about a week ago if I'd ever been to the new super market here... I said yes and he looked at me longingly and said "Yeah, it must be pretty cool, huh?" SO... this morning Pedro and I borrowed his dad's jeep (pretty sure it's a 1960's model), the portable radio, grabbed his two godsons, Ariel and Jaime (the other is a nephew... both 8 years old) made them get dressed and comb their hair, threw them in the back of the jeep and we were off. First stop, as always with boys - FOOD! They were so excited to go to a "restaurant" and get to order what they wanted. Second stop, the much anticipated grocery store - where we ran around and played with the shopping cart, bought a bunch of supplies for the house, and then let them choose fun stuff (they had fruit loops and skittles)!!!
Since we had the use of the car, we decided to continue our goodwill spree. We dropped off the goods and the boys and went to pick up some of the girls and their babies (which included an hour or more of crazy, very steep mountain, cobblestone streets up and down in a very old stick shift jeep... it was an adventure) to take them to out to eat for lunch. Everyone was so excited and happy to be together. Pedro more than anyone, as he has spent the last 9 months in the US studying and will be returning in August.
For me it was a great reminder: for the 8 year olds it was a giant plate of food and a super market that made their day, for the 2 year olds it was the fanta that their uncle bought them at lunch, for the sisters it was the chance to get out of the house... leave behind the laundry and cooking and just enjoy their afternoon, for Pedro it was realizing after his travels what he has here at home (his family), and what he has to offer them now.
Sometimes it's the big things in life that make us happy... but sometimes it's just the skittles that light up our faces and our lives for a moment!

  3. That last sentence -- profound. Bet it turns up in a sermon at Parkway one of these days. Take care.

  4. What a blessed experience you had.
Your folks are back and we all had a chance to have a sermon that made us think about freedom in all forms.
Know there won't be fireworks or organ concerts where you are, but hope it is a special day for you.
