So... today was Adam´s day to show me around since he didn´t have to work, but Sofia did. He did a great job! We ate some magnificent food, first at an Aboriginal place... I had lamb shank and potatoes, then at an Ethiopian place(Sofia joined us)... where we all shared a magnificent meat and veggie spread, plus gelato somewhere in between there! :) He took me to see some gardens, the royal exhibition building, Parliament, a couple of avenues... but by far my favorite was a neighborhood called Fitzroy. I was cracking up at the names and signs that the restaurants and stores had out front. It was quite the funky neighborhood with great places to duck into and be surprised at what you found! Although you didn´t have to look far for some interesting characters - there was a man walking around in a chicken mask and feathers stitched to his pants! This was an amazingly diverse neighborhood. I think I saw Greek, Mexican, Lebanese, Slovakian, Chech, Italian, Ethiopian, Chinese, Thai, and Japanese restaurants and stores!!!
BUT... the trams offered us some pretty hilarious moments today. First Adam and I tried to get a tram but soon found there were none going up the street we wanted, so we doubled back to find one... then we got on one that was going in the right direction, but stopped too soon so we decided to get off and hop on the one behind that said it was going further on its markee. Once on that tram the driver announced the next stop would be the ¨terminating stop¨ and that everyone should get on the tram behind him, so we laughed and looked at each other and just hopped off and popped onto the next one... only to ride about three feet and the driver tell everyone to get off because there´s been a big back up and all the trams need to catch up! So we get off and there´s like a hundred people in the street and four empty trams! haha!
Not to mention last night when the three of us were getting on the tram to head home... Sof and I only had two hour tickets from way earlier in the day (Adam had a full day ticket) so we needed to buy our tickets on the tram. No problem, except they only take coins in the machines... ok, we all start digging in our wallets and feeding the machine. Adam and Sof have put about 25 coins in the machine and they still need $2 or so. Sofia says ok, even if we get mine, what is Kate gonna do? I speak up and just say if I get questioned I´ll play tourist and pretend I didn´t know any better! We´re all laughing and then they realize they really don´t even have enough for Sofia´s ticket... all this time the tram is jerking and starting and stopping and we´re all standing up at the machine trying not to fall. Sofia is saying she is going to throw up cause we had just eaten, Adam is still looking for change, and at this point I´m just cracking up cause everyone on the train is looking at us! Adam and Sof both decide this isn´t going to work so they say hit cancel and lets get outta here... Sof hits cancel, a million coins come flooding out, some of them fall to the floor and Sof is down trying to pick them up while Adam is still trying get the rest out of the machine and the tram is jerking to yet another stop... FINALLY we just get off and stand in the median laughing and looking at each other like ¨did that really just happen?¨
Too much fun!
Later Gators! Kate
